It depends how long you took to get it home that is proberly why its melted a bit on top . You should not have stoppede talking to someoe you knew at the shops but even if its a soft top its still ok to eat and refreeeze .

YES! Very safe....provided there was no obvious tampering!
The reason it's frozen at the middle and bottom parts is these are closer to the surface of the freezer (where I suppose it's colder/icier). Another possibility is it could have sat outside the freezer for some minutes before it was put back - as in some customers changing their minds and yet would just leave the item anywhere....even if this is the case, your ice cream is still safe! I think!

Totally safe to eat. If not, I'd have been dead years ago. I loooove ice cream and that's my favorite part, the melty part.
The top part is nearest the lid and more likely affected by temperature changes, as when it takes you a while to get the container home from the store. The portion below, in the middle and at the bottom of the container, have a lot of product to maintain their temps. These portions are literally helping to keep each other cold, insulating them from the warmer air near the top of the lid and above the lid in the open air.
BTW--This is certainly not a "stupid question". It is, however, a "curiosity" question and is, therefore, perfectly legit if you're going to judge yourself so harshly.

It is melting. It takes longer to melt in the middle and on the bottom so it stays frozen longer. Yes it is fine to eat, just get the container back into the freezer as soon as you scoop out what you want.
