I have minors in biology AND psychology and there is not actually a chemical that goes through your body when you are in love. Your heart does not react at all to a rough break up, it is all pshychological. I have researched multiple cases that sound similar to yours, and often times the effects of the break up can cause major emotional issues such as depression which depending on the individual, can last for long periods of time. If you go through with the break up, and you are having a rough time coping, I would recommend seeing a social worker, or counseler. Hope this Helps you!

Love is indeed brain chemistry...
===============================
Recent studies in neuroscience have indicated that
a consistent number of chemicals are present in the
brain when people testify to feeling love.
These chemicals include; Testosterone,
Oestrogen, Dopamine, Norepinephrine,
Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Vasopressin.
More specifically, higher levels of Testosterone
and Oestrogen are present during the lustful phase
of a relationship. Dopamine, Norepinephrine,
and Serotonin are more commonly found during
the attraction phase of a relationship.
Oxytocin, and Vasopressin seemed to be more
closely linked to long term bonding and relationships
characterized by strong attachments.

I would imagine that a lot of stress hormones are released during times like that. Stress hormones are really hard on the body.
