I've heard that many yoga practices are based on Hindu and Buddhist philosophy? Is yoga a covert way to convert Americans to this way of thinking?

Its a way for women to get out of the house for some "me" time so they can get busy with the trainer after class and stretch them PC muscles.

The yoga practices are more about achieving a state of mind. It has just become a fitness fad in the west. Even if it was a covert way to convert....it wouldn't be a bad thing if more people started thinking like that.

Hatha yoga [the excercise one you see a lot] is an Eastern practice to quiet the mind in meditation. It places unity with mind and body.
There are other types of Yoga which are religiously themed, but Hatha yoga is just excercise meditation.
And no, it is not a conversion attempt.

Yeah right, it is a way to stretch out. That's like saying that making kids do push ups in gym class is a way to convert them into joining the military

Yoga is healthy for the body and mind. Many people of the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and other faiths practice yoga as part of a health/diet routine.

Yoga's just a phase in American culture. It's beginning to meet its end.
By the way, not an effective exercise, and not spiritual. It goes with all of the other new age stuff we see. All it does is give you a little thinking time. And I tend to think all throughout all of my conscious moments.
It's just a way to stretch.

Yoga is physical excercise. You do not need any belief to practice yoga successfully.

I'm getting a negative vibe from you brother grasshopper. You must allign your chakra with the positive vibrations of the life force.
I recommend you chant the Hare Krishna in a lotus position in a fen shui friendly environment.

in many yoga classes not much is really talked about, its just an effective exercise

Western Yoga has almost no spiritual meening it's just a workout for people who don't play football ;-)
