my parents are telling me that if you are still in high school you cannot move out until you graduate even if you are 18 years old. Is that true?

When you are 18 you are legally an adult in all 50 states, regardless of your academic situation. However, you must be able to support yourself, obviously.

I guess it depends on the state you live in because I moved out when I was 17 yrs old and a senior in high school. That was also a long time ago, so I'm sure things have changed since I graduated. Just be sure if you do move out, that you can make it on your own. You need money for rent, food, gas, everything so make sure you have a plan first. Then you won't end up in trouble and having to ask your parents for help or worse having to move back home. Good luck!

If you move out where will you go and how will you support yourself or get an apartment? Come on be serious. Maybe if you could live with a school friend until you graduate and go to college or get a job, but you are not 18 yet and still under your parent's control. Stay in school and live at home. Otherwise you may end up sleeping on a park bench at night or be homeless and sleep in a cardboard box or a shelter.

You are legally an adult which means it's entirely up to you if you choose to continue or drop out of high school while living on your own. Your parents are totally wrong and they probably said it in the hopes that you would focus on getting your diploma rather than paying bills on your own. If you were to move out, it would be more of a challenge to make time for school and studies since you'll have to work longer hours to pay your bills. These days, without a bachelors degree you are bound to end up at a blue-collar job with minimal benefits and no salary. They are afraid that you'll get caught up in the responsibility of supporting yourself and forget about your education. Graduate, enroll in college (either with scholarship money or student loans), find a potential roommate or 2 (to help pay rent&utilities), search for apartments, and last but not least get a part time job. Apply for an apartment, move in with your roommates, and work but ALWAYS keep your education a priority. It will allow you to live a more comfortable lifestyle 5 years from now.

That is NOT true. They're just trying to control you. My sister moved out when she was 18 and in high school.

Well it's not true but if I was you I would stay there until you graduate and enjoy your last year in school without having to worry how your going to pay bills, and where you next meal is coming from. SO just give them the satisfation and graduate and then do whatever you want. Remember if you leave and still in school where you going to get money from, I bet not from them

Yes you can move out, they probably said that cuz they don't want u to leave. A girl can move out at 17 and I'm pretty sure a guy can too. If not then a guy can at 18 for sure.

Are we in a hurry for any special reason? A little too restrictive at home, you're not appreciated, you're not treated like an adult? Are you ready to pay your own way in life? I mean, job, school, bills, etc? You can afford it all on your own? Then go for it. Happy New Life for you!

But your parents will miss you terribly, your mom will probably cry alot, when you can't see her of course. They meant to raise you to be on your own, but that time often comes way too fast. Well if you are determined to be on your own, be gentle with your parents. Always respect them, seek their advise, help them whenever you can and most importantly, Call them every week! HUGS

it would be better if you stay where you are cause you will have trouble getting up and going to school everyday and you will want to drop out of school and you will not get anywhere in life if you do and it is very hard to pay your bills and keep your grades up. Bills are hard on a person that is going to school. and the laws are different in every state so it is hard to say.
