You apply for grants and loans with the same application.
You can do this online.
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
It is better that you are 23 and not living with parents, you are eligible for more money this way. It will not hinder you it will help you. Low income helps too. FAFSAs are typically due in Jan. and the earlier you turn in the more money you are likely to receive. However, you can turn in at anytime.

On your FAFSA you will include what schools you'd like to attend. FAFSA will send you a report back stating what your monetary contribution should be. For some people it is zero, that is best. The schools you want to attend will look at your financial info and send you an award letter. This will tell you how much money you can get. How many loans and grants.
You can choose to deny or accept the loans (you will have to pay them back in the future). Of course you will accept the grants.

As for scholarships. There are plenty you can apply for.
You don't have to pay these back either, bu you must apply for each scholarship seperately.
Go to http://www.fastweb.com to get started.
You can also google:
scholarships + women
scholarships + veteran
etc.. The schools you are trying to attend will also have their own scholarships.

For more info you can see a financial aid counselor at any college/university. Or you can call a college/university 1-800# and ask to speak to financial aid office.

Just fill out the FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid), at your school. If you qualify, you may receive grants for your education. After you initially fill out the form by hand, the next year you can do it online. It is easy and very much worthwhile.

grants are typically given for low income students. unlike loans they don't have to be paid back, so they go to people who need them....when you fill out your fafsa every year your school should provide you with what grants are available to you.
