I am a believer of Karma. Don't ever say the kids or sick or someone has been in an accident. Simply enough, if someone is in this situation, just call. She has no obligation to tell the other person why she is leaving, just that she has to leave. A simple answer: "I'm am really sorry, but I have to give you a rain-check on this date, I have something personal that just came up with a family member and I have to go". -- Done!
Sorry, and one last thing....good for you and your ex to be adult about the divorce and keep it friendly!

No wonder she's your Ex-wife. She runs immediately instead of following through on her commitments. She needs to follow through with the date and state she's sorry but she's not interested in another date. If this person persist in knowing why she doesn't want to see him, then she deserves to be rude by stating she isn't attracted to him. Have some guts.

The truth is always the best policy. Tell her to tell the guy to take a walk. If she uses an excuse then the next time he will still bug her.

Maybe she has to rush home because of a ruptured pipe and the plumber is coming over?

you don't have to talk to him, call her so she has an out, she can make up her own story to tell him. I usually use "my best friend is in this bad relationship and she needs me, I'm sorry"

OK... she got herself in a mess and she is calling you to bail her out.... why are you divorced? She wants you to run to her rescue, and you are jealous of this guy messing with her
