I think boys (and girls) need both parents guidance at all ages - if available. There may be times when he identifies more with his father but he needs both parents. If there isn't a father available, it would be nice if there was a Grandpa or uncle to spend time with him-thoughout the ages. Same if Mom is not around.

Children of both sexes benefit from their father's guidance.
However, you're a little unclear, and I can't tell if you mean "guidance" or "presence". If a dad isn't around when the child is young, it's not likely he'll be offering "guidance" if he shows up only around the time the child "needs his guidance."

In an ideal situation a child will have two parents that love and care for them but in today's world it has become almost as common for a child to have only one parent regularly in their lives.Whatever the circumstances that cause a single parent situation the child has needs that must be met in order for them to grow up well adjusted and happy. Love, guidance and discipline is the key.
Families can be made up of many different combinations of close relatives that play a major role .They are permanent influences and can help you provide all your child's needs. The worst thing is to have people they become attached to constantly coming and going from their lives. What I mean by that is that if you date don't bring it home. Provide the stability your child needs through his family members and don't try to provide that male influence by means that may constantly crumble.I've seen a few children really messed up by those exact circumstances.Good luck to you and your child : )

as early as possible....if not the father ~ then some type of male influence .........
Kids look up at their daddy for protection and consider them as heroes. The lack of attention or physical contact from their dads can affect their ability to perform in school. It could also lead to social and psychological problems as adults.

No, but a boy can always use a good male role model...doesn't have to be related.
