Honestly I would recommend a visit to the salon, but if you insist on doing it at home -

For a start if you want chunky sections you don't want to use a cap, that does fine h/l's, and can be painful if your hair is long. If you want to do the half blonde on top, section the hair carefully from the temples in a horseshoe shape around the head, then isolate the bottom - I would recommend putting conditioner on the hair not being coloured to put a barrier against the colour - then cover with foil. Then apply the colour to the top carefully taking small sections to ensure full coverage.

Colouring chunky sections is more complicated, you have to think about where you want them or you could end up looking a bit daft with blobs of colour all over then place. I wouldn't recommend doing this yourself or even with a friend, it takes knowledge and experience to do it right.

I have had great success with the Garnier highlighting kits available from Tescos, Boots, Superdrug- most places like that! It's the one with the little brush! I've done it a few times now and it's hard to **** it up! I tend to put them mostly on the top of my head as that's what's seen the most. If you wanted to go darker underneath, you could do the blond top bits, tie them up and use a darker highlighting brush kit for the lower bits- but you'd have to be careful they don't touch each other before washing out as they may have a bizarre chemical reaction!! Give the kits a go as they're sooo easy!!

caps are usually used for subtle hifhlights so ig you want dramatic chunks use a highlighting kit, if you want it really blond use a hair lightener kit. To make the sections make sure you use a tail comb & have some clips handy.

To get the half & half dark-light look use a tail comb to section your hair into 2 parts, seperate the bottom section using clips or a bobble & colour as normal, again use a lightener first if you want it really light.

seriously- get a mate to help you- and use tinfoil- or go to the hair dressers to get it done. If thats too expensive go in as a model or find a cheaper heairdresser.

By doing it yourself you risk not doing a good job at the back/ the crown of your head at the back, and if you botch these up its not worth getting out of bed unless your head scarf covers all your hair.

I have had friends with uneven results, with green hair and with hair that was so dry and damaged by the trying, it fell out.
