Yes. They leave the mezzuzah on the door when they move. However, if you're only sub-leasing for 2 years, the apartment still belongs to her.

No, while the best thing to do is to call her and have her remove it, as there are certain blessings you must say, but it is certainly no crime for you to do. Unless she is going to move back, then it must be left there. Jews are supposed to take mezuzot with them when they leave to avoid someone mistaking it and throwing it away. Just make sure to be very careful and leave the scroll in perfect condition, though it shouldn't open. It is very good you asked the question and did not throw it away, personally I would like to say thank you. I wish there were more people that had such respect.

Seeing you are now paying the rent, I would consider it is your space. You would have your own personal items that reflect who you are. You could put it away in a closet for safe keeping, or perhaps return it to her with a note saying you have your own special things that you would like to put up. (I don't know what a Mezuzah is and I missed your first question.) Once again I see I am the only answer that is not in sync with the others, I suppose I should get used to it.

Oooooh. I wouldn't. You are "sub leasing" - but - the scroll is holy and should only be removed by a Jewish person who reveres it and there are special prayers.
Just leave it. I would - and I'm not Jewish either.

If you must....as long as it isnt damaged and the scroll is kept in tact. The scroll is very expensive, about $50. Get a Jew to pray over it too.
But if she is the owner or primary leaseholder, it would be respectful to ask her first.
Does the Mezuzah scare you, bother you? Why remove it (curiously)? I'll check back for an answer.
Blessings

You are leasing the right to live inside the place, you have no rights to change such things... so you should not mess with it..

Why would you want to remove it? It's simply blessing the house and all that enter it. I would recommend leaving it.

What, you don't have Orthodox Jewish friends who might visit you?
Leave it there.
