Most world steelmaking from Blast Furnace feedstock (molten metallic iron) is by the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking process. This process involves blowing oxygen (via a top lance) into the vessel to remove impurities ie C, S, P, Si etc

QBOP are a variation on this process. I believe these vessels are blown from the bottom and do not feature a lance. New Zealand Steel uses a QBOP to process iron sands to hot metal for the casting process.
