I have lived in Seoul for about a year and have had guests in many local hotels. For a medium-priced, very clean and GREAT location, you should stay in Hotel Mirabeau. The link I am giving you will have other options, but Mirabeau is the best. You can walk out the door and be in the middle of very hip and urban food & shopping choices. Also, located on hte green/circle line of the subway, which will take you anywhere you want to go.
Of course, if price becomes less of an issue and you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, there is NOTHING in the world like The W Hotel in Seoul. Location is remote, but this is "hotel as art form" like you will not see in any other W Hotel. The W is a reason to come to Seoul in itself. At least visit the lobby and bar while you are here.

The Holiday Inn in Mapodong is fairly nice and isn't too expensive (you can find it on the Holiday Inn website); I've stayed there. It is a little distance from downtown, but there are many taxis available in the area. More expensive is the Sheraton Walker Hill (even farther and east of town), but is very nice. The Seoul Millenium Hilton is costly, but very convenient, on Namsan. If you will be shopping at Itaewan, the Crown Hotel and the Hamilton Hotel are medium priced. Downtown, there are a number of very nice, but more expensive hotels (like the Shilla, the Ambassador, the Choson, etc.).

Since I am retired military, I stay at the Dragon Hill Lodge on Yongsan compound, but you must be an ID card holder to access the post.
