Well insanity is defined as "Persistent mental disorder or derangement." I've known many religious people and am one myself. I have the ability to reason on my beliefs and form rational statements as to why I believe what I do.
Perhaps only a few hundred years ago, atheism was probably considered insane by most of the population and atheists were ostracized for their beliefs (or lack thereof). How ironic that one would follow in the footsteps of their former persecutors and carry on the torch of ignorance and intolerance...

Religion is not insanity, it's a quest for something bigger and more meaningful than ourselves. It's true that some atheists believe this quest to be insane, since it involves believing somethinng that cannot be proved empirically, but I personally as an atheist would enver hold so narrow a view. I may not believe that something is true or valid in point of fact, but I am not blind to the fact that somethings have an intrinsic value in themselves, whether or not they are based on provable facts.

Some people believe that shouting louder than anyone else makes the voice stronger. It is not volume of voice that matters. It is the content of the heart and the conviction in the words that matter most. What a person believes or does not believe is up to them. God did not create slaves, we are free to believe as we will. Let's hope we all make the right choices, for only time will tell.

Some religious people, some sufis and other mystics might agree that religion can be insane. Discordianism, as a semi-serious example is completely insane. Insanity may just be one way of looking at another person's ways of doing things.
Of course, people do insane things in the name of religion, like flying planes into buildings, or blowing up abortion clinics, or proclaiming to be pro-life and pro-war at the same time.
Atheists don't all say the same things, nor should you lump them all into one category.

What is insanity
in·san·i·ty
1. the condition of being insane; a derangement of the mind.
2. Law. such unsoundness of mind as affects legal responsibility or capacity.
3. Psychiatry. (formerly) psychosis.
4. extreme folly; senselessness; foolhardiness.
1) what is derangement
1. To disturb the order or arrangement of.
2. To upset the normal condition or functioning of.
3. To disturb mentally; make insane.
2) what is psychosis
psy·cho·sis
1.a mental disorder characterized by symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impaired contact with reality.
2.any severe form of mental disorder, as schizophrenia or paranoia.
so for the first three definitions of insanity i can (in most cases) say no, because many religious people's minds work in a way that allows them to function in society
On the fourth definition it varies from faith to faith and individuals within a faith. If their faith causes them to do things that are foolish, and serve no practical, or teaching purpose then yes in one sense it is insanity, but if they serve a purpose other than to identify them as a member of a club then no it is not insanity.

I am a believer. The answer is yes, and yes. Let me explain.
If the definition of insanity is to be "out of one's mind," then indeed, Christians (who profess to have taken on the mind of Christ by reason of their faith and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that leads and guides to all knowledge of truth) are out of their minds, and thus insane! Apostle Paul spoke of this extensively in his letter to the church at Rome.
However, athiests just say it to be rude.
God takes the foolishness of this world to confound the wise!
BTW: Religion is merely visiting the sick and remembering (being charitable) to the poor. See the book of James.

Athiesties don't say that. Neither do us atheists. I tend to call it ignorance, and I don't think that's rude, because the term is neither insulting, lowering, or degrading of religious people.
