I have been to County Shanon, County Claire and County Kerry and they are all absolutely stunning. Staying in the cities can be exciting, but going out into the country of Southern Ireland is a life experience.
Visit the Dingle peninsula. It's awesome.

to greenfan, there is no County Shannon or 'Southern Ireland'. It's called the Republic of Ireland.
Oh and Dublin is of course the best county!

This I have learned at my parents knee - especially on an All Ireland Day when the roars of the throngs of the other counties nearly, but not quite, deafened our own cheers - 'Dublin, they said, is the Best against the Rest'. Sin a bhfuil!

Hi,
I wonder if most of the people who answered know something else than what they listed or named :-))
Ok, I am french, so I am not buyest!!!... and have been many many times to Ireland (And as such, have been to most of Ireland, Also I am married to one of them... enough about the introduction...
Soooo... Personally, I think that most of the areas in Ireland have its own personal touch, so it really depends on what you like...
If you like history, and you like Castles, abbey, etc... Then I would say the East part (Co Meath, Co Louth, and Dublin) are the places to go to... If you like horses and large fields you will enjoy Co Kildare... If you like rude climate with rocks etc... you will like Galway and surrounding as well as Donegal (Which I like very much). If you like farming then it is all the East and northern part of Ireland...
My preferred place, but it is personal, is County Meath, so much history, and beautiful landscape, a bit less rough than the West, which is spectacular, but well a bit too rough for me :-)
here we go

As a Belfast man, I would be biased to say Co. Antrim.
But, surprisingly, very few here seem to mention Co. Donegal. The people there are the friendliest in Ireland in my opinion, and the scenery is outstandingly beautiful, especially the Atlantic Drive.
I also like Mayo, and Kerry, but my overall favourite remains Donegal.
