This happened a few hundred years after the flood, so there were probably only several thousand people at the time, but they started to work together to do evil (they were trying to show God that they were independent and rejecting Him).
So God showed them that they were dependent on Him, and gave them many languages to make there evil deeds more difficult.

They were building the tower of Babel. They wanted to reach Heaven.. This was not a good thing but an insult to God. He allowed different languages to create confusion so they couldn't do the project.

God was talking to Jesus, who was a master worker beside God, and they created all life together. Proverbs 8:22-31. Colossians 1:15,16. John 1:1-4.
Let us make man in our image, Genesis 1:26.
God had commanded man to fill the earth, and subdue it. verse 28.
Nimrod, a mighty hunter in opposition to YHWH, rebelled and wanted mankind to do his will, build this city and stay there.
So, God and the Word/Jesus went into the minds of men and changed their words.
You are right, one language will be helpful in Paradise Earth. God will reverse this situation somehow.
Zephaniah 3:9 For THEN I SHALL GIVE TO PEOPLES THE CHANGE TO A PURE LANGUAGE, IN ORDER for them all to call upon the name of YHWH, in order to serve him shoulder to shoulder.
So YHWH wants people all over the earth to serve him, not have one city where people would crowd around and celebrate false gods.

God has various means to baffle and defeat the projects of proud men that set themselves against him, and particularly he divides them among themselves. Notwithstanding their union and obstinacy God was above them; for who ever hardened his heart against him, and prospered? Their language was confounded. We all suffer by it to this day: in all the pains and trouble used to learn the languages we have occasion for, we suffer for the rebellion of our ancestors at Babel.
Thanks to them, everyone began misunderstanding one another's words—their tongues and ears were completely confused. This mis-communication led to them quitting the project. The confusion of their tongues not only unfitted them for helping one another, but they saw the hand of the Lord gone out against them. It is wisdom to leave off that which we see God fights against. God is able to smack down all the devices and designs of Babel-builders…The builders departed according to their families, and the tongue they spoke, to the countries and places allotted to them. The children of men never did, nor ever will, come all together again, till the great day when Jesus sits upon the throne of glory, and all nations shall be gathered before him.

I am not a Christian, but believe in god. They were trying to build a tower to heaven is why they were split. And let us go down, goes back to the beginning of the bible. God said let us make man in our image. To me this refers to more than one creator. God said it but to whom was he speaking.
