when i hit enter to start a new paragraph a weird looking "P" pops up. when i hit the space bar a "..." shows up. can anyone tell me how to turn this crappy option off?

On the text toolbar go to TOOLS ==> OPTIONS. On the VIEW tab look for the "formatting marks" section. Uncheck all boxes (you likely have ALL checked).

There should be a Paragraph Sign on your Standard Toolbar (Show/Hide Formatting Marks icon). You can easily click on that to turn on/off the formatting symbols.
However, if you have symbols checked under the Tools>Options>View>Formatting Marks, these will show even when you toggle off the Show/Hide Formatting Marks icon.

Check at the top what font you are using. There are special fonts like "wingdings" that produce strange characters.
