Get a puppy!! I'm in school and don't have time to give it all the attention it would need and deserve but if you are lonely giving it love and attention is probably just what you need :). May I recommend a Labradoodle? They are on the expensive side but my family has one and she is seriously the sweetest and most perfect dog EVER. They are 1/2 lab so they love to play and have essentially endless energy, and they are 1/2 (standard) poodle so they don't shed or aggravate allergies. Their fur is super soft and kinda wavy~ we keep her hair cut pretty short but it is pretty long too. You will never be lonely with a labradoodle!! I'm lonely here with my 2 roommates because I miss my puppy (she's not really a puppy anymore but she still acts like it ;)

I also live alone, and I am not a tremendously outgoing person. I have really had to make myself get out and go get involved with people. In my case, that's a ham radio group, my synagogue, and an African violet club. I also have two cats, who are pretty good companions most of the time. More than anything, it's about getting out and making contact, rather than expecting people to turn up at your door.
Good luck!

If you're working, make some friends at work. Find a church family - it can make you feel really fulfilled in so many ways! If you're going to school, make a friend or two there. But don't isolate yourself. Get out there now and see what you can find. Join a club - exercise, arts and crafts, or volunteer. Good luck!

You could join a group of some kind.
Also, you could get a roommate or two--move into some place where there are two other people, but just take enough time and don't hurry it (SCREEN carefully)!
It could be fun.

Join a gym; invite friends over or out to dinner; get involved in league sports; go to church; do volunteer work ; read; watch some good movies; there are so many things you could do - the important thing is that you keep busy.
