A Bible Belt is an area in which socially conservative Christian Evangelical Protestantism is a dominant or pervasive part of the culture. The term "Bible Belt" was coined by the American journalist and social commentator, H.L. Mencken, in the early 1920s.
In particular, in the United States, it is the region where the Southern Baptist Convention denomination is strongest, which includes the entire South and nearby areas. However, many other church denominations are represented, such as Church of Christ and Assemblies of God.
Bible belts can also be found in other countries, including Canada, Northern Ireland and some parts of Europe and Oceania (particularly the Pacific Islands).
The American region is usually contrasted with mainstream Protestants and Catholics of the northeast, the religiously diverse Midwest, the Mormon Corridor in Utah and southern Idaho, and the relatively secular western United States, where the percentage of non-religious people is the highest in the nation, reaching its maximum in the northwestern state of Washington at 27%, compared to the Bible belt state of Alabama, at only 6%

The "Bible Belt" refers to the midsection of America, which is known for being rather heavily religious, compared to the East and West Coasts.
Heavily Christianized also, that is where the "Bible" reference kicks in. A "Belt" is something worn around your midsection, also a particular strip of land.

The bible belt is a sort of unofficial geographic term used to describe a horizontal patch of area in the middle of the US. It was given its name because residents of this area tend to be republican/conservative in their political views. Republicans/conservatives are often associated with fundamentalist Christian values. So it is basically a stereotype applied to a certain area of the US based on a generalized political association.

I'm guessing it's called that for a similar reason as why some of the Midwest is called Tornado Alley.
