How exactly does it work and what are different things that contribute to your 'total'. What do you need to reach the different ranks? For the Army. Thanks.

From E1 to E4 it's automatic. You are just going to have to wait. Showing initiative with correspondence courses and going to the soldier of the month boards will get you waivers. When you enter the NCO ratings everything from civilian schools to military schools and correspondence courses to awards to PT and weapons qualifications and the boards will set you up in the right path.
GOOD LUCK

I think for commisioned it's almost the same. It's automatic up to a O3. The you have to take command and up you go.

Boo, first poster. Those are all things you want to do, yes, but they have nothing to do with your points.

Your promotion points will come from:
- PT score
- Awards, achievements, etc.
- Military education (including weapons and any other training)
- Civilian education

As for the number of promotion points for each rank, I'm not sure.

EDIT: This is for enlisted only; I have no idea how the promotion system for Army officers works. Sorry.

Basically you can earn up to 800 points max for promotions.
It is broken down in the following catagories:
Up to 100 Points for Military Training 100
(50 Points for maxing the PT test and 50 Points
for scoring expert on your assigned weapon)
Up to 150 points from the promotion board 150
Up to 100 Points for Awards 100
Up to 200 Points for Military Education 200
Up to 100 points for civilain education 100
Commanders Points up to 150 150

So you add up all the points you have accumulated and that puts you on a promtion list. Lets say you have a total of 560 points. The points needed for promotion are published every month for the next month. So if the points come out at 550 for April 1st you would get promoted. If they come out at 561, you would miss it by one point. This system is only for the grades of E-5 and E-6. Check out the below list for a more detailed explanation.

There is no point system for officers, a promotion list comes out with a sequence number. whne you sequence number hits then you get promoted.

follow LDRSHIP,don't argue with CO, and stay in the army to move up a rank. Ask your CO. how you get promoted.
