First of all, congratulations on having a son so dedicated to the sport that he has gained such a spot with Olympic aspirations.
He shouldn't be too concerned about this, for there are many who have had to deal with this problem in all walks of competitive life. It's simply a matter of nerves that will gradually work itself out as he becomes more experienced.
However, if there is something he would like to do to start taking control of it now, then I would suggest giving seated and/or standing meditation a higher priority in the training. While the drills and sparring are a great way to train, there is no better way to control the mind and body than to have focus. By training more rigorously in relaxation (I'm aware of the oxymoron there) :-) he should be able to enter a more focused and relaxed state of mind when he spars.
Best of luck.

I was always very nervous while waiting in the dressing room, before entering the arena. When entering the arena, the huge adrenaline surge would overpower the nervousness.
How you control the nervousness is really up to you. I went to extremes that others probably didn't and I wouldn't suggest anything I did for someone else. This is really something you will have to figure out on your own.
What I would suggest is that you ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing? If your nervousness is that extreme and doesn't go away before you begin sparring, maybe this is not for you and somewhere deep inside you know it.
You have to be a bit of an entertainer and comfortable in front of the crowd with all eyes on you. If you aren't, well.....?

Non Narcotic
and absorbed thru the skin
Use your nervous energy as a tool
It will allow you great speed and adreniline rushes
also makes for fast scared reflexes

Do you purge (stick your finger down your throat so you will expel the contents of your stomach enabling you to look more sexy during a fight)? If so you should stop.
