Kimo, you raise an excellent question. This Christian does not believe in the trinity. A better verse to use is actually one later in that chapter. At John 14:28 Jesus plainly says "the Father is greater than I am". Fact is that if you read through all Gospels either Jesus was speaking to his Superior or he had a mental disorder. John chapter 17 is a prayer. Who was he praying to? John 5:30 - "I cannot do a single thing of my own initiative; just as I hear, I judge; and the judgment that I render is righteous, because I seek, not my own will, but the will of him that SENT me." Who sent him? So many scriptures like that.

Finally a couple of common sense observations: The Bible says that God is eternal... from Everlasting to Everlasting... yet Jesus died. And since Jesus died and was resurrected, if he was God, who was in heaven to resurrect him.

Jesus and his Father are one, as was stated, but in purpose and thought not in BEING.

Doesnt actually say that!! John 14:1 says 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me' Jesus here is saying that you need to trust in God and him to get to heaven since he goes on to talk about heaven Christians believe in God the father and God the son. They believe that they are seperate beings but the same God. Jesus also said 'The father and I are one' Hope this helps the confusion

The Bible is very clear that Jesus Christ is God and came to this world as God in the flesh. It is the constant theme throughout the entire Bible. Jesus is clear that He is the only way to the Father, and that He and the Father are equal.

Joh 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Joh 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

They are one in the same. Read John 17, also

Ancient Hebrews should have gotten a women gods in the stories. It would have been more believable today. Women were lower than 2nd class citizens in those days and today the religion is fading because of the Hebrews failure to predict future trends. Of course the 3 in 1 concept is used in a brand of oil today.

he makes himself one with the Father. Jesus as the very honest person he is, would never put himself on the same level as God if it wasn't his right.
Jesus was 100% God and 100% Man. He was praying to the Father and worshiped him as the Man Jesus. Because he was fully Man he was dependent on the Holy Spirit to do his works.

Jesus' two natures are not "mixed together," nor are they combined into a new God-man nature. They are separate yet act as a unit in the one person of Jesus. This is called the Hypostatic Union.

Jesus and God are two parts of one thing, the best analogy i can use to describe the holy trinity is water, water vapour and ice, they are all H20, but in different forms, so they are all the same, but all different. that bible verse is not stating that they are seperate but it is used in a different context. at the time the jesus was talking to jews, who were waiting for the messiah to come, so jesus had told them who he was (the son of god) but they did not all believe him. John 14 goes on to say in verse 6 and 7: '6 Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ this means that iorder to get to hevan they must believe jesus is the son of god, and that jesus is the physical part of god, they have now seen god, and know him. and he is saying in john 14 vs 1 that they need to believe in god and that jesus is the son of god, they already believed in god, as they were jewish, but had not yet accepted jesus as the messiah. therefore in order to get to hevan they needed to believe jesus was the son of god, and he was instrucing them to believe this.

i hoped this helped explain

That verse actually teach that Jesus is God! Please put on your thinking cap for once and really THINK! Who is Jesus asking people to believe in? God! He is asking people to believe God. And here's the shocker, He is asking people to believe Him! In effect He is telling the hearers, "You believe in God, right? Well, then you should believe Me, because I am God." And please, read the entire John 14 again. If you still come to the conclusion that this chapter denies Christ's divinity, I wonder how you even pass your English!
