Welcome to Thailand...Bangkok is fun visiting but if you want to see more about Thailand, you should go to some island. Turtle island is not too far, take a bus or a train to Chumporn then take a (speed) boat to Turtle island. Very beautiful there...

If you want to go see locals in Bkk, then you should go to some area like Silom, Siam, Bus stop, sky train station, seeing movie, dining out at Kased Tudmai area, etc.

The budget would be 30-40 USD a day, depends on your style. Everything is cheap here but you have to find out. Have fun and good luck.

Hi Pete, if you are going to see how the locals live, then you need not be spending much, except maybe for traveling around to see this!

Meals will be quite cheap. You can even get a pizza meal for about 5 USD, and if you go local food, it will be about 3 USD. With breakfast provided by your hotel, and 5 beers a day, you probably will be spending about 15-20 USD daily.

However to see the local way of life, you will need to travel to the fringes of Bangkok. One way is to take a cruise on the Bangkok canal waterways, to see how they use the waterways as part their livelihood. Using it as means of transportation, to fish for food, to irrigate their farms and orchards. You can even buy from some of the owners along the way.

Pay a visit to the Grand Palace. After that take a stroll along the Chao Phraya river side to see the commerce that had been going on, some unchanged for many years.

If you can, visit Samut Songkhram and Nonthaburi. These places just outside Bangkok will show you some rural living. See the village in Ko Kret.

Visit the Ancient Ruins in Ayutthaya. It is quite majestic what they Thais built in the old days.

I guess if you take it easy, these 11 days may not be enough to do what you want!

wow! eleven days in one place. why not explore other areas of thailand, too? koh samui, chiang mai, etc are wonderful. you won't need lots of money there. think about 5 bucks for each meal--ONLY 5 beers a day? I think you do drink alot. beer is cheap. Total, you will need about 20 dollars a day for food, transportation and even though you don't like tourist sites, going to a temple, gettting massages, visiting the markets do cost a bit, too and you will want to do some of that. enjoy!

It really depends on "which people" you want to see how they live. Bangkok has everything from ultra-wealthy to literally dirt-poor, sometimes living in the same neighborhood!

i would figure $30 to $50 a day, but once you met the cute girl working at that bar the price goes up.
