Horse has a thickening of tissue located underneath her mane all the way down the back of her neck. What is this?

I always heard the old timers say it was a sign of past founder.

It's a crest. Usually found on stallions or overweight horses. Even when an overweight horse has returned to a healthy weight, the crest will stay. I'm not sure why.
Most Hunter trainers and judges will tell you that a crest is not unhealthy, in fact it shows good care, and that it flatters the horse, making them carry their head lower without losing the "round" look a Hunter is supposed to have.

This is serious, it could either be an allergy, and infection or a swelling of the muscle/tissue from an injury. I would strongly suggest you call your vet.
Has our horse had this before, or any similar muscular or tissue swelling?
Have you changed the grain or grass you are feeding your horse?
Have you over worked your horse in collection?
Call your vet!

It may be founder. Check to see if your horse is lame, and get the vet to check it out. Some horses do have a naturally thick crest though.

Sounds like a thyroid problem, have your vet check it out and maybe do a blood on her, but it's nothing to get too worried about.
