It's based on the Hadiths and Q'uran wherein women AND men are expected to comply with 2 forms of "hijab", interior and exterior... the interior variety is modesty in conducting your behavior (eyes, speech, etc.) and exterior... covering whatever you believe (within a certain set of guidlines) will grant you the privacy of the prying eyes of men... and men are expected to cover themselves to a degree of modesty.

Muslimahs do it to be recognized as such... and to be given the respect. They enjoy (or would like to) the concept of not being ogled for their looks alone and respected for their minds, AND they do it out of what they consider obedience to Allah.

Various forms of hijab were adopted during the Muslim spread into (then) Persia... and culturally adapted into various forms, such as, the burqa, abaaya, chador, etc.

I hope that summarizes enough... there are actual Muslimahs and Muslims in here to answer... my reply comes from YEARS of studying Islam from varying angles... hopefully I gave a clear enough overview.
