a technique, based on ancient Hindu writings, by which one seeks to achieve a relaxed state through regular periods of meditation during which a mantra is repeated.

Often, the mantra is "Aum" (which many of us think of as "Om"). Aum is the Hindu symbol of everything. It encompasses all. You will find Aum in Hindu Temples at the altar.

TM is a technique for achieving calm and finding the center of your being. Or so it is said. I went to a school that taught TM and the traditions that gave rise to TM: the ancient Indian Vedic culture. It is interesting because typically, if one learns and practices TM (it's very easy), one finds they seem to make better decisions. However, most of the Vedic ideas are baseless on anything logical. It's mostly human centered in arrogance and silly dogma. Like any religion gone bad. So, take my advise, if you are interested in TM, go for it (but the fee is way too much for what you get back, THAT part is definitely a scam), but be very wary of the philosophies and dogma that go with it. Even better, just take some time to sit quietly and let your mind wander for at least ten minutes. That is all TM is, really. Hope that helps

Transcendental Meditation as taught by the Maharishi, is the best method for Westerners, because Westerners are so result driven they want immediate measurable results. There are many published studies by the medical fraternity which attest to optimum physical and mental results after only 12 months meditation and all it asks meditators to give up are recreational drugs. If you want mental clarity, a lighter feel to your body and a general feeling of well being, you cannot do better than TM.
