I am sorry that is happening to you but you can fix it. As far as being mean there is little you can do about that. Mean people suck and the best policy is to put distance between you and the meaness. The hitting on the other hand is against the law and all you have to do is tell him, "Stop hitting me as it is unwelcome and unwanted." If he persists in hitting you call your local police department and have him arrested for battery and a judge will explain that it is against the law just before he passes sentence. No one and I mean no one is to endure abuse of any kind and there are laws against it, use them. His grief will be of his own making and there are other things that can be done to limit his presence around you. Do not be afraid but do protect yourself. Remember everyone has an opinion and the one they have will probably not be with someone hitting them so the opinion they have holds little value. Life doesn't have to hurt and if you cannot do it by yourself there are a myriad of professionals that will assist you. It won't go away if you ignore it but if you tell him and then act in just the manner you advise you will be impressed at the respect you will gain. like Nike says, "JUST DO IT"

You're still calling him your boyfriend. I think that you are confused about what a break up actually is. Why is he even around to hit you? Call the police. That's called assault when someone lays hands on you in anger. Also you should have no contact with him what so ever, if that's the way he is with you.

If your under 18 tell your parents.
Is this why you broke up with him?
If you are over 18 call the cops, or he will still keep hitting you.
He has some anger issues.
Been there - done that. When I hit him back he cried to the cops and they wanted to press charges against me. Me?!!???!! the one time I hit him?

How does he get the opportunity to hit you if you have left him? If he hits you call the police and report it and then get a restraining order. He sounds like a nut case.

You really need to distance yourself between him and yourself, never meet him alone and always stay around other people. Contact your local law enforcement agency and file a protection order. Make a report every time he hits you. It may save your life.

Why is he hitting you if you are broke up? Stay away from him, if you must see him, avoid him and threaten to call police.

go to the police! get an apprehended violence order or whatever its called in your country, where he cannot come within so many metres of you home or your school or your work! and the police will talk to you about your options in filing charges against your ex.

he cannot be harassing you, let alone hitting you, this is illegal and down right WRONG! - this is ABUSE!

Tell him if he hits you again you are going to call the police and charge him with assault. Maybe he would take it better if you were still friends. Take care Heather
