There really was no clearly defined beginning. It became apparent during the baptism. When I came up out of the water, I was face to face with what looked like the sun. An intense image of a sphere of light filled my peripheral vision and, for lack of better words, information started downloading into my mind.
The experiences left me changed at the core of my being.

-----hmm...I thought you asked: how DID you die to self. My bad.

repent and cleanse ourselves in the precious blood of Jesus.

2 Corith. 7:1 - Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Jesus said, "cleanse first the inside of the cup\bowl and the outside will become clean also".

What do you "think" is your self? Let this self "drop" off. Practise being still, old habits die hard, this may take awhile but also "it takes no time to be what you really are, but is has taken time to misguide you so completely". All suffering really is, is a case of mistaken identity.
