A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and Adaware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it every again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php....

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

There are many things other than spyware which will slow your computer down.

One thing disk-related you didn't mention was defragmentation. You should try running DEFRAG to see whether that speeds things up. Sometimes it can help a lot.

You might want to check out your memory usage by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager and clicking on the "Performance" tab. It should show your memory and page file usage. If you're maxing out your memory then you probably want to see if there's anything you can remove from your system that is consuming memory unnecessarily.

If you look at those icons near the clock in the lower right those are actually programs or utilities related to something installed on your computer taking up memory. If you click on that little circle with a "<" in it and see a lot of icons there, that means a bunch of applications have installed bits of themselves so that they're running on your computer all the time. If you see a lot of stuff down there you're not using then you might consider lightening the load on your computer.

Beyond that, there's reinstalling Windows as others have suggested, and if that doesn't work then beyond that you might simply need to upgrade. Upgrading RAM is the easiest way to improve performance for a given amount of money, but make sure you really need it by checking your current memory usage. If your slowness is connected with I/O (loading applications or large files) then maybe you're looking for a mainboard upgrade to get a faster disk, but make sure you've done a defragmentation first to make sure that fragmentation isn't slowing you down.

Good luck!

McAfee 2007 sucks wouldn't use it. Remove some of your protection like said bofore, to much of a good thing is bad. Reinstalling Windows would be best, then install only one of each kind of spyware and antvirus program. If that doesn't work get more RAM. Also go to msconfig and turn off some progams from starting up. Start - - Run - - msconfig go to the boot tab and turn off progams that are not system related for to do with spyware and virus software. Now instead of then starting with your computer when you boot, they will wait till you click on the icon for them

You also need to make sure you run scandisk and defrag and your computer on a regular basis. If you have XP right click on your c drive/go to properties and click on the tools tab. If you haven't done this in a while it may take a few hours, but once you start doing it on a regular basis it will not take as long. Also make sure you clean out your tmp folder and temporary internet files regularly.

It sounds like you got so much "anti" software on your computer that all of those programs are slowing your system down. Virus scan programs alone can slow your PC down as a result of it constantly scanning and scrutinizing every file that comes through your hard drive.

By the fact that you've mentioned spyware and viruses, you must be using Microsoft Windows. Once it starts slowing down, a re-install is your best option. This will restore the operating system to its optimal speed.

You may need to ungrade your RAM. First, make sure your windows is completely updated by going to windows update from the tools menu in IE. Or, try booting from your Win XP disk and doing a repair of Windows.
