IThe Belvedere in Times Square - extremely clean, very friendly staff and every room has a microwave, fridge and microwave. Rooms start at $160 - you may be able to negotiate a better price at PriceLine or Orbitz. The train and bus are on the corner and there are theatres on the same block.

A hotel, which is close to, but not in Times Square (it's a lovely residential area) is the Murray Hill Suites on East 39th Street (the main street in Times Square is West 42nd Street). Every room is a suite, has private showers, kitchen area with microwave, fridge, dishwasher, coffeemaker - you'll save money if you make your own breakfast and bring back your restaurant leftovers - and very reasonable rates. Read what other guests have to say - see if they will stay there again, and look at the photos they took (do the same for any hotel that you are considering).

If you don't mind sharing the bathroom,
The Gershwin Hotel is supposed to be the best of the budget hotels - The New York Times says it's spotless - it's in an excellent residential area - 27th Street off Fifth Avenue. They have very inexpensive rooms for two - some with bunk beds and shared bathrooms; the more expensive rooms have private bathrooms. There are many excellent restaurants and coffee shops nearby - close to buses and subway. If you click "Contact" they give you a phone number, a fax number and an email address. This sounds like an excellent deal for one day - (If you require a private bathroom, be sure to specify).

A restaurant with the real "flavor" of New York is Katz's Deli on Houston Street near Ludlow on the Lower East Side interesting area to walk through (note: we prounounce this Howz' ton not like the Texas city). There are two areas at Katz's - one is self-service and one is waiter service. Definitely sit in self-service - you go up to the counter, order your sandwich and, tip the counterman a dollar or two. He, then, will put much more meat in your sandwich than a waiter will bring you. (A few years ago several reporters went to Katz's with a small scale - some sat in waiter service and some sat in self service - all the self service sandwiches had at least a quarter of a pound more meat).
To add to the New York experience, drink a cream soda or celery tonic with your meal. Sandwiches are big enough to share - get an order of fries and you're all set. My favorite there is tongue and corned beef on a club roll.

Two excellent inexpensive Italian restaurants:

Near Union Square: Via Emilia on East 21st Street and Park Avenue. Appetizers are unusual and outstanding - gnocco fritto - large platter of Italian coldcuts served with delicious little fritters; tigelle (not served in too many places) hot biscuits with proscuitto and melted cheese; wonderful soups, good pastas, fish is always fresh. Some desserts are outstanding.

In the West Village: Da Andrea on Hudson Street and West 11th Street.
Excellent pastas - I especially love their clam sauce, they, too, make tigelle, can get very crowded on weekends.

Could you make that any more open a question. How about some hints as to price you want to spend, area you are looking to stay in. That's for starts with hotels. Restaurants, well, they are everywhere, no way can give you any help on this. Look thru Zagats or Google or rephrase question and ask it gain with some details. Then someone can help you. This is like asking, where in the world should I go on vacation and where should I stay.
