The monster is describing himself, as a blasted tree, (when trees are struck by lightning they sometimes explode) a wreck of a human being, the bolt was the lightning that gave him life. He is stating that he will live, but not long and that while he lives he will a miserable thing for people to look on and pity...but he will look upon himself and hate the sight. He fears this kind of life which Frankenstein has given him.

But I am like a blasted tree, struck by lightning.
The bolt, entered my soul; I felt life and I desired to exhibit life. But that will cease with what the world sees and what I myself see: A self, that I desire to survive; but as a black and twisted tree, only presents life through its dark form; a miserable spectacle of wrecked humanity. The arid stench of something living, burnt, alive; pitiable to others. Abhorrent to myself.

I see this all against a black and twisted tree, torn by lightning and, like Frankenstein, radiating a burnt smell. A tree where no birds nest, where no bloom of glory is ever possible. A tree where no lovers will meet and no children ever play. A stark image.
Like us, in a body he did not ask for, this monster crys a question: "What price have I paid for this soul?"

Adam Frankenstein, the "creature" put together by Dr. Frankenstein (out of various body parts), hates his own existence. He is not considered a person by anybody, including himself, and has no hope for his own future, save to act as a gruesome example to others: "Don't imitate Dr. Frankenstein's actions."

Adam can expect no love, no family life, no decendents, nothing good. He is horrible to behold, and feared by all who see him. Hounded by others, who fear him, he still yearns for the companionship of human beings. This, he is denied. He is even denied death; his body parts have already been through death, and have been forced back into functioning by the Doctor, so has no hope of eternal rest. He can, however, feel all kinds of pain, physical, mental, and emotional.

If he could, he would die. The bolts that hold his body together, he feels, chain up whatever makes up his soul as well. He is stuck in an existence he does not want, on a world that does not want him.

Adam Frankenstein was one of the saddest characters ever invented.

The Doctor called him "Adam", because he felt that he was playing God, and re-inventing Man.

ok.. in addition to Mamabear's insight I will add

Mary Shelly was dumped by her boyfriend and wrote a novel about Frankenstein because of being jilted... no lie... just fact

ALSO

MAry Shelly happened to be VERY impressed by the scientific work of a Mr Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin. Erasmus Darwin had scientifically proved to her that dead things could be given life. He left dead meat out and worms and flies appeared out of NOWHERE!!! she was so impressed she wrote Frankenstein

there you have it
no need to thank me
anytime

its a combination of a jilted lover and Farnkenstien 'evolutionary' science gone amuck
