My boyfriend was supposed to get his income tax refund back either Saturday or Monday. Today, Saturday, he received a letter from the IRS. The letter confirmed the amount that he will receive back, but no check inside. By the way the letter read, it sounds like the check should have been inside together with the letter. This is his first income tax return so he doesn't know if the IRS forgot to put the check in there, or somebody stole it, or the check would come in a separate mail later on. Had anybody experienced this? I'm so confused.

Sometimes, if there was an error on the return, the IRS will send a letter describing the error and the amount of the adjusted refund. The check will come in a brown envelope.

Every refund I've ever received by check has come only in a brown envelope with no explanation at all. I know they send a separate letter to explain any adjustment to your refund amount. This usually results from a math error or an offset to pay a federal debt. If rereading the letter does not clarify the issue, try calling 1-800-TAX-1040. That is the main customer service number for the IRS. They should be able to access your account and determine why you received the letter and if and when your refund check was sent. I am assuming you did not request direct deposit.

Checks come separately from notices. But I've never heard of receiving a notice if the refund is going to be the same amount as was shown on the return. If it changes for any reason, up or down, you'd get a notice. It sometimes comes before the check, sometimes a short time after the check.

Many times the IRS will send you these notices when you have your refund check direct deposited into to your checking account. Has he checked the bank and did he sign up for direct deposit o his return. If not I would definately call the IRS. You will need the info from his return such a ss#, filing status and return amount. Good Luck

The checks are mailed in a brown envelope with lady liberty on the check. However if he gave his bank account information they will direct deposit the money.
