you should really have called the police. it makes a big difference when it comes to the insurance companies and who is to blame and who pays who. you should start talking to your insurance company and tell them what all happenned. you'll probably also have to tell the same story to their insurance company.

Well unless the other person who hit your car is agreeing to pay you for the full damage they done to your call, then thats the only time you do not call the police because the other person did not want to have an accident on their record and have their insurance, but then your insurance would never know of this incident and will not be able to cover for any future damage caused by this incident, it is best if you called the police. What happens now, well if must have taken down the other person's information, call them and arrange a meeting where you guys could discuss how that person who hit your car will be paying for you damage, you should get an estimate on the cost of repair for your car first.

Good luck, hope everything works out for you.

Was the other person at fault? If so, they will need to contact their insurance company and so will you. You don't need to contact yours if the other person claims it is their fault and is willing to take responsibility. I know this from personal experience when I was struck by a car once. If there is a dispute between the two of you, you should contact your insurance company and explain in detail what happened. They will fight in your behalf with the other insurance company for you. I took pictures with my cell phone just as a added protection for myself.

Rarely do police come to accidents anymore where I live in California. They have better things to do I suppose.
