When my pet cockatiel lets me scratch around his ears he starts doing this weird "yawning" motion over and over. A friend of mine says he's trying to regurgitate and share food with me? Is that true?

VERY true !!! Birds do this when they are showing you their love for you...and their comfort. It's totally harmless, and kinda touching when you think about it. :)

Birds do yawn the way we do, it could be your scratching makes him comfy and sleepy. Usually if he's trying to regurgitate he'll hold his mouth open and bob his head and neck back and forth. Usually you can smell a weird fruity birdseed smell when they do it, which is basically like a burp coming up. Either way, he's just expressing appreciation and it's nothing to worry about.

Does this happen with an up and down motion of his head? If so, he is trying to feed you. Probably what is happening is it feels really good and it would be similar to the effect of you plugging and unpugging your own ears.
