Babies and young children don't really know how to control their gag reflexes. Once the gagging begins, whether due to something yucky he ate or crying in hysterics, it's really hard to stop it.
I have a son and daughter both who have done that to me more times than I'd like to count!!
Oye!

It is a temper issue. Or if he she is not throwing a fit when he she does this, then they may be fasinated with the actual gagging part. Some kids will do that as well.
Weird but true.

When my daughter was a toddler, she would gag very easily, but then I finally remembered that her Dad did too, even when he brushed his teeth. If it is just like this, then they just have a very sensitive gag reflex. If it is more than this or he is actually sticking his finger down his throat, get thee to that dr.

My son just turned two and he does this when he is mad. Like at night if he doesn't want to go to sleep, he will cry, gag, puke, and repeat. I usually try and get him before the puking part, but I try and let him cry it out (advice from his pediatrician) but that never works. Could she be getting upset and uses that as a way to get your attention?

my little girl does this, and it irritates me. She is now 23 months old, but she've been doing it for a long time now. When she can't get her way, she'll cry until she makes herself gag and vomit wherever she is.

Did he just discover his hangy-ball thingy? My son did that for a while when he discovered his and it was very annoying I wouldnt give him much attention for it though just told him it was icky and then after that I dont think that he lkiked the feeling anymore and so he pretty much stopped by himself

I know someone that had a daughter that did this anytime she didn't get her way
maybe he does it because crying about it won't work with you? maybe he does it because he doesn't feel good? maybe he's got a bad taste in his mouth?
at this point there's really no knowing WHY he does it. If he's not in any danger, I'd say clean it up and ignore him when he does it

Give him a binky. Maybe he just wants something in his mouth!
