My girls (cats) got spayed today. (about 7 hours ago) They are upstairs sleeping which I know is normal. What I'm concerned about is that the one that I've touched is usually a very healthy weight cat (maybe a little "thick" at the stomach) but it feels like.. you run your hands down her sides & it's "flat" consistent, and then your hands go in.. like.. like a waist.. I know this doesn't make much sense but it's so hard to explain. Is this normal? I mean they did take out her uterus and ovaries.. Any one with experience on this?

I asked this question here and on craigslist.com 's pet forum. I talked to a vet there about some of it. She convinced me to call the answering service for the vet I used (it was actually a mobile discount vet .. S.N.A.P. if you want to look it up for yourself.. i got it done free but even if you pay its like 20-40 dollars depending on if its dog, cat, male or female.
A lady called me back in about 2 minutes and said the cat was probably fine. It was mostly the weight thing that bothered me. It literally looks like she got a big chunk of insides taken out and now her skin is too big for her body.. you know how an emanciated cat looks? well shes healthy all over, but looks emanciated right there..
No one has really given me any reasons for why she looks this way, but it seems to be harmless. about 4 am she started moving around a bit.i made little steps out of stuff so they wouldn't have to jump up on the bed so they are happy. Thank you all for your answers, its hard to pick the best

Yes, its normal, she will be back to normal in no time. They would have had to fast before the operation, and her body needs to recouperate. I got mine done and looked like I didnt feed her for a month - there was nothing of her. But she fine in about 5 days.

Well done you. It makes you feel horrible but it is the one best thing you can do to safeguard their health - though it won't seem like it for the next day. They may come back a bit groggy and you may have to give them pain killers for a couple of days. Buy them something light to eat such as cooked chicken or fish. You could try to keep them from jumping up, but a cat will be a cat and its near impossible. Keep an eye on how they react to the stitches, they may groom around them and not want to pull them out but it does sometimes happen. Keep them indoors for at least a week so that the wound will heal clean and the meds will have left their systems. We have 6 different vet practices in Coventry and each one does it slightly different. Some stitches are dissolvable and won't need to be taken out, some vets insist on a follow up visit, some vets will put a cone on the cat, some will give pain meds out (some will give a longlasting pain med to the cat). So listen to what you vet tells you and follow his instructions. They can operate while a cat is in heat, they may bleed a bit more during the op but vets can cope with that.

Aftercare

The cat will most probably be quiet and sleepy on the evening of the day of surgery. This is quite normal. The cat should be kept warm and given peace and quiet once they are home. They can be offered some food although some animals choose not to eat. Water intake should be actively encouraged.

Occasionally a cat will chew and lick her stitches. This should be discouraged since this can lead to pulling out of the stitches and hence the wound could open up. Also cats have many bacteria in their mouths and so they may cause an infection in the wound. It is can be almost impossible to stop cats fiddling with their wounds once they have decided to play with them. If the cat seems to be bothered with the wound it may be necessary for them to wear a buster collar (Elizabethan collar), which are available from any of our branches.

It is a good idea to contact one of the vets if any of the following problems occur following spaying.

* If any of the stitches appear to have been lost.
* If there is any excessive swelling in the area or if the wound looks very red.
* If any pus is noted oozing from the wound.
* If the cat remains lethargic on the days following surgery.
* If the cats appetite is not back to normal a day or two following surgery.
* Bleeding from the wound.

The practice provides free post operation checks 3 and 10 days following surgery. The 3 day check is to make sure there is no excessive swelling or infection present and that the wound is healing OK.

The 10-day check also looks for the things mentioned for the 3-day check and also to remove the sutures where necessary.

It is very important that animals are presented for their post- operation checks since problems are not always easily identifiable to the untrained eye.

While weight gain can occur in bitches following spaying there is no scientific evidence that weight gain or lethargy is any more common in spayed cats compared to unspayed cats.

It is normal. There have been some internal organs taken out of her body, so her body is just readjusting to the changes.

They will sleep even more than is usual for cats over the next few days.

You are a very loving and caring pet owner to have them spayed, there are so many unwanted kittens in the world. It is better for their health as they age also.

Have a good night.

I'd say normal. She's had surgery, so things may have shifted a bit. She will be back to normal in a few days.
