Are jack russel terriers the same as rat terriers? Because I was told they were, people just started calling them jack russel terriers because they forgot that they were used to fend off rodents and took the breeder into consideration.

I'd like an answer from someone who knows dogs or that has a good idea.

The difference between a Rat Terrier and A Jack Russell Terrrier Or as they are now known as a Parson Russell Terrier can be very slight... Do not be fooled they are two distinct breeds even though they may look very similar.... Jack Russells are usually heavier in build than Rat Terriers, longer in body and shorter in leg.. The head of a Rat Terrier is also more often than not more rounded than that of a Jack Russell..... Their are also various other differences between the two breeds .. One of the biggest difference between the Two breeds is........ RAT TERRIERS ARE NOT RECONIZED AS A BREED BY THE AKC.

Here is a link on both dogs. I do know from watching dog shows that the rat terrier and the jack russell terrier are showned as seperate breeds. the jack russell is smaller.

about it not being a breed.....Recognition of today’s Rat Terrier is limited and little has been written about the breed. This is probably because of this mixed-breed stigma and due to the fact, as recently as 1994, the Rat Terrier did not have a written breed standard. Rat Terriers existed in numbers, but were considered by many to be a strain of Smooth Fox Terrier and sometimes were even referred to as being a "Fox Terrier” by others. For decades, breeders in various pocket communities around the country had been breeding toward their own specific standards; mostly purebreds, but with some crossbreeding for size or color, etc. Registration was haphazard and usually done, if at all, with pedigree services and many individuals lacked a documented multi-generational lineage. Plagued by these problems, and technically, without a written nationwide standard, there was no breed.

No they are not the same...they are two totally different, unrelated breeds.
