Is open mindedness required to truely understand Islam and to be a true Muslim?
I ask because as far as the the overall understanding of Islam goes, there are the Islamophobic people who are preaching basesless falsehoods about Islam on one end and hate-fueled murderous so-called Muslims on the other end. Both sides are working from an almost if not complete lack of understanding of Islam.

Harorld B, wow
Thank for posting the Islamophobic side that I was refering to. I have not butchered any non-Muslims nor will I since it is not onyl morally, ethically wrong it is forbidden by God as it is written in the Holy Qur'an.
You should be greatful that Christians aren't tagged butchers and what not because of Hitler, the Genocide in Bosnia and other attrocities perpetrated by Christians. The bible tells Christians to kill non-believers and as former Christian and current Muslim I have never been dirrected to do any of this. Thus I speak of open mindedness. The Geneva convention is pretty much spelled out in the Koran.

May the peace, blessing and mercy of God be upon you
I can agree with you that open-mindedness is required for those who astray to truly understand God's guidance he has given us.
But I would argue, with open-mindedness, there has to come the true intention of learning the religion and its meanings FROM THE PROPER SOURCES, for the sole intention of please God All-Mighty.
Everyone of this Earth WILL be judged as to how their life was life, NO DEED will go UNEXAMINED.
[086:004] There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels in charge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds).
(V.86:4)
a) Whoever intended to do a good deed or a bad deed:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbâs [May God be pleased with Him]: The Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] narrating about his Lord said, "God ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be written, and He then showed (the way) how (to write). If somebody intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then God will write for him a full good deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and actually does it, then God will write for him (in his account) with Him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times, to many more times; and if somebody intended to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then God will write a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intended to do it (a bad deed) and actually does it, then God will write one bad deed (in his account)." -- [Sahih Al-Bukhari, 8/6491 (O.P.498)]
So you can tell from both sides of the islamophobe and the deviant extremist, they are both FAR from the Straight Path of Islam, which is submission to our creator, and patience for the reward of being a creature who has submitted to the All-Mighty's will.
This is why I try my best to learn the religion from the original sources, and not from the OPINIONS of Sheiks/Mullah's which may have deviant views.
I try to make the supplication/innovation to God, PRIOR starting my daily prayers
" I have turned my face sincerely towards He who has brought forth the heavens and the Earth and I am not of those who associate (others with God). Indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death are for God, Lord of the worlds, no partner has He, with this I am commanded and I am of the Muslims. O God, You are the Sovereign, none has the right to be worshipped except You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant, I have wronged my own soul and have acknowledged my sin, so forgive me all my sins for no one forgives sins except You. Guide me to the best of characters for none can guide to it other than You, and deliver me from the worst of characters for none can deliver me from it other than You. Here I am, in answer to Your call, happy to serve you. All good is within Your hands and evil does not stem from You. I exist by your will and will return to you. Blessed and High are You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent unto You.’
Peace Be With You

Muslims have killed enslaved and persecuted anyone that disagrees with them since the time of Mohammad.
Armenia was the first Christian Nation but the Ottoman Turks killed all the Christians. Perhaps you could enlighten the world with your compassionate understanding and tell us why that act warrants acceptance.
Islam is a brutal savage religion and a look at Darfur in the Sudan today will convince you. From your point of view all the victims really had to do was to invite the Islamic butchers to a marshmallow toasting campfire and sing "Khom Bye Yah" and everything would be fine.

Yes, I agree with you. People who are quick to say that all Muslims are terrorists or why don't Muslims condemn those terrorists really don't understand us Muslims.
I'm sure you already know this, but I have to clarify it for those who don't know.
Islam doesn't command Muslims to kill other people or to become a suicide bomber. If people would take the time to talk to a Muslim then they might be ashamed to talk dirty about a person who would never harm anybody.
Also, there are Muslims who are openly condemning terrorists. People just see what they want to see.
Altogether, I see a lot of hate towards Muslims and it bothers me a lot. They have never met me and to quickly judge is a bit harsh. I understand people fear what they don't understand and if they want to hate me for what I believe in then it's ok. I have my own life. I love being a Muslim and nobody can ever take that away from me.

Open-mindedness is not required to understand Islam any more than it's needed to understand Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Mormonism, or any other -ism. It just takes accepting with faith what is taught.

ALRIGHT your smartness.
explain the murder to show it is not shiite/ sunni murder.
In Dafur, genocide by muslim killing anyone.
Indonesia's, whole villages killed by muslims.
Your sounding off has NO explanation of the loving forgiveness of allah,, from any quot in from the koran ;qurran; or any book, chapter, verse.
get off this silliness to twist the logic that we don't know..
I know I don't abide opium.
Most Americans are well informed of the islamic religion.
In five years,, all too familiar media reports of muslims continued outrage, mortar attacks, road side bombs, suicide idiots
you need more.
Why don't YOU tell us what the muslim community especially here in America is doing.
WHAT are you doing to stop the insanity
We can see your 'intolerance' that we don't agree with you by your continued assertion we have no understanding of islam.
No one hates you YOU.. But it sure seems, you don't like us pointing at what thousands of people have been saying for 1500 years, Islam is evil ,violent ,discrimintory ,dominating , unjust and more.
Good bye

Are you referring to the baseless falsehood where the Koran tells Muslims to kill infidels by every means possible? 9:5?
That one?

Every religion requires you to have an open mind. It is like asking you to open your door so they could enter. Once in, they will tell of all the things about their religion. Oftentimes they act like home cleaners, removing everything they think is dirty in your house. when you become satisfied then you can thank them for clearing your mind of other stuff. Once you are convinced then that is the time they persuade you to close the doors for other religions to come in. They will require you to open your mind only for their teachings.

The problem arises whenever a religion is "organized"--It then morphs into tribalism--which it turn breeds intolerance. It seems particularly prevalent in those religions that follow the God of Abraham.

Open mindedness is a good thing, so no matter what religion preaches or opposes it, it's a solid virtue of character.
