The term 'Jew' is not degrading. The Jewish people have been know by that title for many thousands of years -- it is used in the Bible in a non-degrading manner. The term is simply a slang or shortened form of 'Judah', one of the tribes of Israel.

However, there are so many people in the world who hate the Jews, that they often use it as a degrading title.

Probably the best person to ask would be your friend.

People are silly in how they react to a word.
It's actually not as bad as when I joke with my girlfriend who is black about her liking crackers. Considering I am white.

I also noticed at a restaurant they had three types of honky eggs and I laughed when I pointed it out to her. Clearly some terms are acceptable and some are not. It is all based on the person.

Perhaps it would be viewed as an insult to call a German a Germ. Never heard it done but I personally find it amusing. And yes I am German!

It depends on how it's used. There is nothing wrong with using the word "Jew" as a noun. For example, "Jews celebrate the holiday of Passover." That's perfectly respectful. What you need to avoid is using "Jew" as an adjective. It is wrong, and sounds derogatory to say something like "Passover is a Jew Holiday." What you want to say is "Passover is a Jewish Holiday."

Not that I know of, and I'm Jewish. Maybe she thought your friend was not a Jew and you people were making fun of Jews? It happens alot. Best not to yell it, unless there's a sure way for your friend to show he's a Jew.

I know it. I used that term on this site and I sure didn't mean to use it in a nasty way because I thought that is what the person was but, she violated me and said all kinds of stuff about me. Others came to my defense though, some of them were even Jewish themselves and said they had no idea why she got so upset. I don't know though but, it seems like maybe your usage did seem a little weird but, I wasn't there to hear it either.

No....and yes. Remember that tone of voice is everything. I call one of my very good friends "Brat" -- but with lots of affection in my voice.

On the other hand, Jew is short for Jewish, of course, which in turn describes the peoples from the ancient tribe of Judah -- one of the 12 sons of Jacob (aka Israel).

Not really, I have a few very good friends that are Jewish, and they refer to each other as jews, and I call them that, and they are not the least bit offended.

No, but it's bad to use "jew" as a verb, or to call a cheap person "jewish" as an insult.

This was asked recently by someone else, so apparently some people are offended by it. But if your friend isn't, the other lady should mind her business (maybe she didn't realize that he is Jewish or that you were friends).

It somewhat relies upon on the guy. One buddy refers to himself as "the Jew" of our team, regardless of the undeniable fact that, yet another Jewish individual i understand somewhat takes difficulty with that word. Ask the guy first.
