Just to correct one of the answers, there are actually 3 types of memory semantic, working and long-term.From my understanding none of these can be improved, however it is possible to train your brain to retain a significant proportion of the memory from your working memory as long term memory

There are two types of memory, the short term and the long term, the first for small staff that you can remember for a minute or so, and the second for almost unlimited time. Stimulate your memory by playing games that ask questions
(jeopardy, etc.). Get a 'Word Seek' book where you find and circle different words in different categories. Read, read, read.
