A church?
The Elks/American Legion/VFW?
Someone's back yard?
The Park?

Mine was at the golf course clubhouse basement (it is set up for that type of thing and the local high schools have their proms there).

You can hold a reception everywhere from a big hall to a relatives house. It really just depends on how large your wedding will be, and how formal. It also depends on the plans for a wedding. If you were to have 400 guests and 3 live bands, then having it at Aunt Jill's house may not work as well as a big hotel hall.

I am having my reception at a dance hall (they have the greatest prices in the world). We are having 150 guests, with a DJ, food and dancing.

If we were to have a smaller amount of guests, we could have had it at a relatives.

So church hall, VFW or American legion, park, community center, someones house, ball room, etc are all appropriate places to have the reception. I have also seen one held at a restaurant.

A church basement is always an option. However, if you want a more formal reception, then you should check into having it at a hotel or at a country club. The main problem you run into is that most placees charge a lot of money just to be there. However, most hotels and country clubs just have you spend a minimum in food and drinks if you choose to have them. I am planning my wedding right now. We chose the Marriot for a few reasons. They can divide up the room to fit your number of guests, which can greatly reduce the price for smaller receptions, like mine. Also, the minimum for food and drinks can easily be met, we are having 50 people, a buffet, and no drinks...we met the $1250 minimum for 1/4 of the ballroom, but the total won't be much more than that. I hope this helps

it all really depends on whether or not you want a dance as well. If you do not plan on having a dance, usually the church fellowship hall is the place to have it, unless it is not big enough. You can also find a place, such as a nice restaurant that has a reception area, with a dance floor too. An Elks lodge is another option if someone in your family is a member.

If your church has a recreation area or base ment or you could rent a hall. Sometimes if someone has a large enough house or yard you can have it there. Where ever is big enough to hold all the people you are going to invite to it.
