About 5 years ago, my parents got divorced. Lets just say that my Mom wasn't interested in keeping the family together at the time, which I think is a source of guilt for her today. Things have been going OK, but sometimes she thinks that I'm distancing my self from her. Recently, she has began to cook excessive amounts of food for my brother and I. I'm talking like a 6 pound tray of brownies every week, and tons of other unhealthy food. I am always trying to be healthy, and I have told her many times to stop making this kind of food. In addition to my concerns, my brother is beginning to become overweight. He is starting to spend more time on his computer, and less time with his friends due to his worsening problem. Between these two factors, I am absolutely dumbfounded that my Mom continues to make ridiculous amounts of food. Dose anyone know why my mom is doing this?

She is trying to make you love her more. Explain to her that you do not want them. Or just stop eating it. When she throws away a few 6 lbs. trays of brownies, she'll slack off.

You have sort of answered your own question; she feels guilty for neglecting you and your brother so she is trying to compensate for it. You need to sit down with her and have a heart to heart telling her that you (and your brother) can't eat this type of food for your health sake. Tell her that you would be glad to spend time with her that doesn't involve such unhealthy foods. Let her also know that your brother is gaining a lot of weight and that isn't good for him. If she still continues after having a honest and calm discussion, dump the junk food in the trash. If she complains about it tell her that you are not going to watch your brother get worse and not do anything.

It could be that your mom is using the large amount of cooking as her way of showing that she loves and cares for you and your brother. She doesn't realize what effect it's having and that's why she continues to cook so much.
In a way, it's her own kind of therapy.
