If you are serious at least get the book Wicca, Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, by Scott Cunningham. Witchcrat is a religion, not play time for children. Take your time, learn about your religion, don't just jump into spell work or you may regret it. There are way too many people who say they tried it and it turned out badly. It is because thay had no basis for what they were doing. If you do not learn the basis of your belief then odds are real good that anything you do will backfire. And if your sister wants to play with it she will get hurt, more than likely emotionally, not so much physically (unless she is messing around with herbs).
My dad disagrees with my choices too, but on the other hand my mother was a witch (somehow he had no idea). I have been practicing for over 40 years, he loves me but thinks I should convert to Christianity!
I am a Buddhist witch, the 2 are quite compatible since both hold deep reverence for nature. We were put on this planet
to serve the earth, not the other way around.
Now I am going to be cruel (well, as cruel as I ever would) by calling your sister a fluffy bunny pretender! I am hoping you are not one too.

There's two views on this: If you're doing magick willie-nillie, either nothing will happen because you're heart and intent aren't into it, or you could really goof something up and be sorry you played around like that. My suggestion is to take magick seriously so you don't do something you regret.

Another thing you need to understand is that magick, itself, is not a religion. You can be of any religion and be a witch. How can this be? Well, you have to understand magick. Magick is nothing more than your intent going out to your Deity or the universe. That said, affirmations and prayers are big-time magick. For example:

You know when you're having a bad day because you're afraid you're going to fail a test, even though you've been studying really hard? Well, what's one of the things people say to you? Probably something along the lines of "Think positively. Think over and over to yourself 'I will succeed.' " That's because, when your state of mind changes, your actions change. When your actions change, amazing things happen. That is magick. Magick is using the intent to do something to change your surroundings.

It's a misconception to think that all you have to do is say a few rhyming words, point a wand, and you'll automatically see change. That is not magick. That is Hollywood. I suggest you pick up some reading material befor eyou start messing aroud with magick. The first book I recomment is "The Truth About Witchcraft Today" by Scott Cunningham. There's a link below so you can order it online. It's cheap and a very light read.

I hope this helps!

Your sister will have limited if any success and could find that much of what she attempts to do will backfire.
In order for a person to tap into forces that are outside the human realm they must believe in those forces. You can't exactly connect with someone that you do not believe is real!

However I feel a word of caution is necessary here. Do not play around with things that you do not fully understand. Doing so is a good way to get yourself hurt and or killed. There are forces out there that are not exactly nice and if you just go haphazardly invoking spirits you may invoke something far beyond what you are prepared to deal with. The result could be lethal!

Witchcraft is both a craft and a religion, and most ppl who practice it participate in the Old Religion, that is, paganism.

However, there are many Xian witches including Mormons, Jewitches, Islamic witches, and I assume Buddhist and others. You do NOT have to make it a religion to practice it. In fact, I have practiced with witches from different faiths on many occations. I have even practiced with those who don't take it 'seriously'.

If I were to do any activity, say basketball (which is of course a game), I would not have to practice it seriously to enjoy what it is supposed to do for me. I might get fitter, and learn more about myself, and make a few friends. I would not have to play professionally to derive some use from the practice.

Magic works, and it works well, but only for those who practice at it. If your sister chooses not to make a serious study of it, that is her choice. She may find that some small use of it will clear her head, or teach her to come closer to the Universe and it's causal relationships, or she may be more sensitive to it's workings. And there is nothing wrong with that. And there is nothing you can do about it, either. You get to decide if you are going to work with her, or move forward on your own.

I have been a witch all my life. I never 'got into it', nor did I turn to another, more acceptable faith. I have always practiced the faith as well as the craft, and was dedicated by the time I was 12. I have never experienced the agonies of doubt, because I did not give in those around me who were uncomfortable with my beliefs. You cannot please everyone. Sometimes you can barely please anyone. Now, I try to cook so everyone likes it, but I will not change my faith so more ppl consider it proper. My mother forbid me to burn candles and incense in my room even into University, and constantly derides my faith and always has. She has never broken me. She has only made my determination stronger in the face of such blatent discrimination and repression. Fighting it now, outside my home, is a piece of cake. Relitively...

Your faith is one of the most intimate, private choices you can make. You cannot make it for your sister. She cannot dispute yours. You get to decide if you will work with her or not. She cannot be harmed by the Craft, btw... That's a myth, designed to keep newbies from cursing and love spells and such. Magic can only come from within. If she isn't working on herself, then she will produce no good magic. Rather like music, really... The music of the Universe. It will not boomerang or fly back, anymore than a person who wasn't a good practicing Xian would have God hit them with a car. Your INTENT can hurt you, yes, just as it can in anything else. Starting a rumour to harm someone, for example, can backfire and you can be labeled a nasty rumour monger. But you can't control that in your sister, either. She will do what she wishes. If she wishes to control or harm, I'm sure she's attempting that in a more concrete form in the physical realm as well. Keep your thoughts pure, your focus real, and your heart sincere.

Witchcraft the Craft is designed to work with the Universe to achieve goals, like healing or punishment or love. Witchcraft the Old religion is to achieve personal Enlightenment. I have always worked for both...

I feel that you should become wise before you play with fire...or spells. Do a lot of research. Find a good teacher. If nothing else read a bunch of books by Scott Cunningham. As far as your sister goes. All you can do is gently encourage her to follow your example. You dad now, just be patient with him. Do not flaunt what you are doing in his face and he may come around eventually. Just be sure that when he does come to you about this that you are able to give him educated answers. Good luck to you and I wish you well on your path.

I have the same problem too, I can't tell my dad I practice Wicca because he would freak out. Tell your sister how you feel about what she does. Is she younger or older than you?

Magick shouldn't be performed by those that don't take it seriously. It could have serious consequences. Your sister will do what she does and you do what you do.

As for your dad... well there are some choices you're just going to have to make for yourself. Part of growing up is making those choices alone.

Your parents aren't going to always agree with everything you do.

Well, I'm a practicing witch (over 16 years now).. It shouldn't matter to you what other people think of your personal spiritual path, sweetie. You need to follow what's right for you.

It's magick not magic.
If your sister thinks it's stupid ignore her. She could be jealous of you.
It's your choice to practise, not your parents', not your sister's.
But be careful with black magick, it's very dangerous and can harm you or others.
