Good suggestions above. I have another: Skip the Donner Pass and take highway 50 to Lake Tahoe. It is truly one of the most scenic places in the area.

One of the fun things to do there is take the Heavenly Tram from South Lake Tahoe up several thousand feet. I don't know how it is in the ski season, whether you have to have a lift ticket to ski or whatnot, but it still runs in the summer and has the best views ever.

In Sacramento, you must see Old Sacramento -the place where the Gold Rush began. It's attached to downtown Sacramento by a pedestrian tunnel. Spend a day to see those two. On the way in and out of downtown, have someone drive you past the buildings. It is a law that new buildings in Sacramento must have public art.
William Land Park, on Land Park Drive at Sutterville Blvd. is just 2 1/2 miles south of downtown has many things to see, especially a small, but excellent zoo.
In summer there is WaterWorld, a water park with lots of features for cooling off. You can ask me more questions through Yahoo! Answers. They have a way to do that.

In Ca just of I-80 you have donner pass/ summit site of the ill fated Donner Party. When you get to Auburn, CA take CA state rout 49 east from I-80 for about 30-45 minutes and you will come to Coloma, Ca this is the site of Suter's Mill the California gold discovery site. The whole town is a State Park. Auburn is about 45 minutes to an hour from Sacramento.

You will be going west on I-80. Not much until you get to Wyoming. Stop at Devils Tower in NE Wyoming. Also stop in Guernsey, Wyoming at the Oregon Trail Monument. Then in Utah, take the Mormon Tabernacle tour. Not much in Nevada except Reno. Then you will go over Donner Pass. Stop at the monument at the pass. Then you will go down hill all the way into Sacramento. Be safe.

While in Sac you need to go to downtown sac.. it's got a lot of cool attractions and awesome places to eat. Also, if you're into just sight-seeing, go out hwy 16 to amador and calaveras counties... they've got really cute boutiques and it's an awesome place to relax.
