I am installing ubuntu 6.10 on my windows machine from a burned ISO file downloaded from the website. I want to know if it will damage anything already on my computer. I have looked through the FAQ, and it seems safe, but I want to know about first hand experiences. Thanks!

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

You will have to re-size your partition to make room for the UBUNTU (5.0 GB minimum go for more if you have the free space). Use PartitionLogic for this operation.

Also, you will sometimes get inane answers here. Also ask your questions at the UBUNTU and LINUX sites. Let them know that you are a newbie.

First, you need to be sure if you have an installation file. Usually, Linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu, Knoppix, Fedora...etc.) come as .iso image files. Users download the file and burn the image to a CD. The CD becomes what is commonly called a "Live CD." A Live CD does not need to be installed on to the hard drive. Instead, you place the live CD in to your CD drive and boot off the CD. When your computer starts, it will be running in Ubuntu. All the system files reside in the live CD; so, there is no need to read from the hard drive. This is a convenient way to try Linux distributions without actually having to install it. You are better off using a live CD than installing it. If you do decide to install it, you have to set up a dual boot Windows computer, which is not hard but you need to know what you are doing otherwise you can unintentionally cripple your computer. Please read Lifehacker's excellent article on how to do so:

The easy answer is: No. You won't.

If you do it right. Install Ubuntu on a different partition. Ubuntu will install the grub bootloader and identifies the Windows partition. The boot menu will include a choice to start Ubuntu or Windows.

So, be careful to install Ubuntu and the Swap space on DIFFERENT partitions or harddisk.

Good luck

you should be able to install it beside windows ok , but if you are not experienced or worried , the later versions have a 'live cd' that you simply put in the drive & run ubuntu straight from the disk on boot up - not actually installing it untill you get the hang of it all .

Usually yes. If it is not installed first. And as you are a newb you will mess it up.
