We have several small holes in our yard that are covered with moss when small cone shaped hilltop is removed from the ground there are leaves and twigs covering the inside of the hole. The hill is about 4-6 inches high and covered in moss. The hole is about 1-1 1/2" wide. It doesn't have the mud ball shape like a crawfish usually does. We haven't seen anything going in or coming out but the hill stays soft so far.

Gophers leave mounds like that but not the twigs, leaves, etc. Might be a ground-squirrel.

A mole, maybe, or a chipmunk or ground squirrel (close, but not exactly the same thing.)

A very small groundhog.
