Lateral curvature of the spine. It could be due to things like defective embryonic development, tilting of the pelvis as in hip disease, poor posture, disease of the vertebrae, weakness in spinal muscles, rickets, sciatica, or difference in leg length.

There are diferent categories of scoliosis. By far, the most common is idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown.

Another category is congenital. This form is a result of a developmental abnormality of the vertebrae. Some genetic conditions can cause this form of scoliosis - Marfan syndrome, Osteochodrodystrophy and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are three of these congenital conditions. These conditions cause a structural scoliosis that is congenital.

Still another category is nonstructural. It's called functional scoliosis. Something, such as unequal leg length or chronic muscle spasms or inflammation, can pull the spine into a lateral curvature.

That nurse's answer was good. But here's something else that's a little different. Scoliosis is mostly caused by there being pressure on the spine. To relieve this pressure, the spine ends up curving to one side or another. The reason we get this pressure on our spines is because we evolved from animals that walked on all fours. They had spines shaped kind of like Cs, but when the transition to walking upright was made, the spine shaped changed as well, to an S shape. But evolution is rarely perfect, so that's why spinal disorders are so common.

wow...what a big pile of craps we have here lol..
everyone's an expert eh? lol..
there are many different types of scoliosis and most common one which you are probably referring to is idiopathic scoliosis. They call it idiopathic because the causes are unknown. So what I'm about to tell you are hypothesis based on all the evidences we've gathers so far through research...

First, there seems to be general prevalence. However, it's not as simple as, if you have this gene, you have scoliosis. Rather, there's an environmental factors at work which haven't been identified.

So you could be born with genes that may predispose you to the condition. Something may trigger it. There are also hormonal factor. This gene seems to have an effect on melatonin hormone which also has effect on growth hormone...levels of these hormones are irregular it seems with scoliosis patients and often sleeping patterns are irregular as well...There's one doctor (Dr. Moreau) who's in the process of developing blood test for scoliosis using this knowledge..

anyway..what happens is that on vertebral body, there's 5 growth center and one of them seems to lag behind others in growth rate..that kickstarts the tilting. Greater loading on one side due to tilt further retards the growth and during growth spurt, severity can increase rapidly. There are also muscular and ligamentous involvement as the condition progresses..but they are secondary to what's happening..

That's the gist of what's happening....

Scoliosis is a deviation of your spine. Some people are born with a defect in their spine, in others it's caused by bad posture for a prolonged time. In occasions it may be caused by for example caring a heavy book back everyday on the same shoulder.
Physical therapy exercises and chiropractic manipulation are some treatment to help improve the condition.
