How were Adam and Eve supposed to know that disrespecting God's command was *wrong*, as long as, well, they hadn't eaten from the fruit of knowledge yet? And what were they supposed to do with their free will, since they couldn't tell good from evil?... (I mean, possessing free will means being able to choose what seems *best* for you, but if I lack data, like knowing which alternative is morally right, how can I choose properly?)

...So the main problem was not the disobedience, but the simple fact that they didn't believe/trust God? If I tell a child not to do X, because Y will happen, and he does X though, and Y does happen, the child will rather have learned to trust me, then to obey me...

And I'm not doing this just for my agenda (and even if I did, I have asked something, not shot someone down and laughed viciously over their body, bad-dude-style). I do believe in coherence, besides the more coherent the myths are, the more beautiful they seem, and though some incoherent things are minor indeed (like the wax winks problem), other are not, therefore are worthy to be discussed.

Jan - I know it might be silly, but I can't hold it - now, why have they been given those private parts in the first place, ...to test their free will again?

First, knowing something is one matter, knowing its *value* is something else.
Then how on Earth can I *choose* between life and knowledge without already possessing knowledge? Wouldn't it be a rather random choice?... (not to mention that knowledge is, for Heaven's name, nice and healthy, and that it actually does rescue life sometimes)

Adam and Eve did the first scientific experiment to test their facts. They wanted to know right from wrong and found out they were wrong.

Even according to the letter of the Bible, evil must have existed before Adam and Eve, who, therefore, are innocent of the slander of the original sin. For, had there been no evil or sin before them, there could exist neither tempting Serpent nor a Tree of Knowledge of good and evil in Eden. The characteristics of that apple-tree are shown in the verse when the couple had tasted of its fruit: “The eyes of them both were opened, and they knew” many things besides knowing they were naked. Too much knowledge about things of matter is thus rightly shown an evil.

Adam and Eve knew it was wrong because God told them it was wrong. God was very specific about not even touching the tree.
BUT the manuscripts are clear that the tree of knowledge of good/evil was Satan himself. Eve wasn't only being tempted by
an idea of gaining knowledge. She was
"beguiled" by Satan, which means "wholly seduced".
When Adam and Eve realized what they had done was wrong they sewed fig leaves together to make what? A mask because they ate an apple? No, they made aprons to cover their private parts: the parts of them that participated in the sin.
This was a very serious sin, because it was the first time in this flesh age that Satan attempted to pollute the pure line of lineage, that down the generations, womb-to-womb through Eve, would come the Christ Child.
This rabbit hole goes much deeper than many realize..........

Gen.3:1-5;
Eve knew not to touch the tree in the midst or center of the garden, if she touched the tree then she would die and she knew what die was, opposite of life is death.

Eve was plugged into her life source as long as she did not disconnect or unplug her life source, to touch the tree meant she did unplug or disconnect her life source and she was on her own to become imperfect in sin and slowly go into nothing, from dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return. So there is a second death after the resurrection for those who disconnect or unplug themselves from their life source, the life of the soul is the spirit of God the Father and life giver.

Gen.3:22; Good and evil did exist before Adam and Eve was Created.
Job 38:4-7; Angels exist before Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve were last, everything was in preparation to perfection for them, eternal life is LOST from Eden, to be SAVED and there must be a new heavens and a new earth as perfect as it was before Eden, not a life threatning raging planet.

The bible would not let us know what variety of fruit became on that tree or the tree of existence. going against God's instructions is sin although that's not fruit on a tree. some have self assurance the tree is symbolic jointly as others think of it became a literal tree. the bible says it became a literal tree so i think the bible. each now and then that's right in basic terms to settle for the be conscious for what it says and not attempt to study it.

we all tell our children not to do things that will hurt them, but when they disobey and do it anyway they have to pay the penalty, we have all told our children not to touch the stove when it was on, sometime the only was to know the results is to touch the stove.

there were two trees i the garden, the tree of knowledge and the tree of life, today there are also two choice to make you can choose life or what the world today calls knowledge.

I personally choose life, knowledge has a habit of changing with the advent of new discoveries.
the knowledge of today is not the same knowledge of 1907, and will not be the same in 3007.

I wouldn't say it tosses Christianity out the window. It tosses bad theology out the window. Adam & Eve didn't need "the ability to choose God", i.e. free will, before the fall. They had fellowship with him anyway.

After the fall, they stood in need of salvation but it was God's grace that saved, not their own ability. They lost that. Claiming free will anywhere in the process is simply error in my opinion.

It is recorded for us that Jehovah would talk to the man Adam during the breezy part of the day. Adam relayed those instructions to his wife Eve and added that she was not to even touch the tree.
They were not lacking intelengence, what they did was a deliberate act of disobedience to Jehovah and his Sovereignty.

Adam and Eve actually walked with God everyday so I doubt they were ignorant of the situation at hand.

I'd say to trust my Creator over someone else. But the temptation is what they gave into, plus they were tricked into thinking that their Creator lied to them.

p.s. Quran says God forgave them and we are therefore not born as "already sinful" ("original sin), i.e. babies are innocent.
