Actually, that newspaper refused to print cartoons of Jesus less than a year before, on the grounds that it might offend people and radicals might do crazy stuff.
In Poso Regency in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, a newspaper editorial resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Muslims at the hands of Christians, back in 2000.
Christians take control of embassies and kill people all the time too, for various reasons. A Turkish ambassador was killed by a radical orthodox group in Greece on July 4, 1994. A Chaldean led the takeover of the Greek embassy in Vienna on Feb 16, 1999 and at last least 9 of the 16 who took control of the Kenyan Embassy in France on this date were Chaldean, as were almost all of those who took control of the Kenyan and Greek embassies in Bonn, Germany. The Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors took control of the Burmese embassy in Bangkok on Oct 2, 1999.
However, I do note that the majority, if not all of the people killed as a result of the Muhammad cartoon were people who were trampled to death after police fired tear gas into crowds at protests. There was also a guy who was knocked over the railing on a bridge during a peaceful protest parade.
I also note that Jesus is a prophet of Islam, so Muslims would not be happy about such cartoons either, though they likely would offend a wider variety of people and not be seen as anti-Muslim, as some of the cartoons published so clearly were.

You gotta take different cultures in to perspective.
If there was offensive pictures of Jesus, say, 100 or 200 years ago, you can bet their would be blood to pay. But people have been conditioned throughout the years to different views about religon and offensive images, so today their maybe would be an uproar, but not very violent, if at all.
Islam, while not new in Europe and the western world, is just beginning to be acknowledged. Before that, the Muslim culture was really just in the east, which was harder to get to, and relatively untouched by the western world. And suddenly they're getting all these new ideas smashed on them, without getting used to it like the Christians.
Another thing to take in perspective is religous rules. Christians have been creating art about Jesus for a long time, since the beginning of Christianity in fact, with relatively small protest.
Muslims, when they depict Mohammed's life, don't even draw the prophet then. Instead, they leave him out, because they believe it is a sin to make pictures of him, or other religous people.
So for a non-Muslim to make a cartoon, of all things, of your propeht has got to be extremely offensive.
I would've been offended, for sure.
(I'm sorry if this is worded awkwardly. I'm not sure how to explain things sometimes)

Wasn't there a picture of Jesus in urine, or something like that? Christians had a conniption and some threatened to cut funding to the National Endowment of the Arts because of it.

Different things offend different religions. Certain christians (a minority) like to protest funerals and bomb abortion clinics. Each group has their nutjobs.
