The celibate clergy did not come into full bloom until about 1000 A.D. There were many married priests, bishops, and popes before this time.

Priests, religious brothers and religious sisters (nuns) as part of their vocation choose not to marry following:
+ The practice recommended in the Bible
+ The example of Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and the Apostle Paul.

+++ Scripture +++

+ In Matthew 19:12, Jesus says, "Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."

Jesus says celibacy is a gift from God and whoever can bear it should bear it. Jesus praises and recommends celibacy for full time ministers in the Church. Because celibacy is a gift from God, those who criticize the Church's practice of celibacy are criticizing God and this wonderful gift He bestows on His chosen ones.

+ In Matthew 19:29, Jesus says, "And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life."

Whoever gives up children for the sake of His name will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life. Jesus praises celibacy when it is done for the sake of His kingdom.

+ Matthew 22:30 - Jesus explains, "At the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven."

In heaven there are no marriages. To bring about Jesus' kingdom on earth, priests live the heavenly consecration to God by not taking a wife in marriage. This way, priests are able to focus exclusively on the spiritual family, and not have any additional pressures of the biological family (which is for the vocation of marriage). This also makes it easier for priests to be transferred to different parishes where they are most needed without having to worry about the impact of their transfer on wife and children.

+ In 1 Corinthians 7:1, Paul writes, "It is a good thing for a man not to touch a woman."

This is the choice that the Catholic priests of the Roman rite freely make.

+ Then in 1 Corinthians 7:7, Paul says, "Indeed, I wish everyone to be as I am."

Paul acknowledges that celibacy is a gift from God and wishes that all were celibate like he is.

+ In 1 Corinthians 7:27, Paul writes, "Are you free of a wife? Then do not look for a wife."

Paul teaches men that they should not seek marriage. In Paul’s opinion, marriage introduces worldly temptations that can interfere with one’s relationship with God, specifically regarding those who will become full time ministers in the Church.

+ In 1 Corinthians 7:32-33, Paul teaches, "I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife." And in verse 38, "So then, the one who marries his virgin does well; the one who does not marry her will do better."

Paul recommends celibacy for full time ministers in the Church so that they are able to focus entirely upon God and building up His kingdom. He “who refrains from marriage will do better.”

+++ Scriptural Examples +++

Biblical role models of a celibate clergy came from John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.

John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that the example of the Essenes influenced either or both Jesus and John the Baptist in their celibacy.

WWJD? What would Jesus do? Jesus did not marry.

The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).

The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.

A priest is "married" to the Church. Some people think that a priest who takes his duties seriously cannot take proper care of a wife and family. "A man cannot serve two masters."

With love in Christ.

I don't know what is nun ..

But Ortodox Priests are obliged to marry today if they want to become priests tomorow.

God says in the Bible through apostoles that only if someone can stay without sex or love ..he shouldn't marry , and can be priest at church of God .Is nice to be a pure priest ...like an angel

But if he wants to be in love, to love or have sex , he should marry.Even if he will be a priest and great priest.

The fact that catholics e.g prohibited marriage, is against the complete teachings of the bible , and it happened I suppose , MENTALLY because in their history someone was very proud, or because in those times many were kind of saints and could live like that without wife and love because they had to be martyrs and how could they fall in love with so many things upon their head against christianity?People worhiping idols , emperors sending even their sons to death for being christians...

But now they should marry if they cannot live like angels..espeacially that women display their bodies, and that people are so ...unfaithfull, they must find a shelter in a wife..

And if they were angels from God powers when becoming priests , I should have never heard of homosexual priests ...

The Pope dies and goes to heaven. St. Peter meets him at the Pearly Gates and begins telling him that he was the most holy man who had lived in a long time. "And since you've been so good, we're going to give you the premium package to heaven. You want an audience with God, you've got it. You want to talk to somebody, you've got it. Is there anything else I can do for you?" he asks. "Well," the Pope says, "Do you have a library here? There are some inner issues I want settled, you know, what God really said to people." "Sure," said St. Peter. "It's right over there."So the Pope goes into to the library, and he has a wonderful time. He starts looking through all the books, exclaiming over this and that. A little later there is a horrible racket coming from the library. The angels rush in, and the Pope is throwing books around, breaking chairs and screaming "It had an 'R'! There was an 'R'!" The angels come up to him, and say, "Pope, what's the matter?" He looks over at them and says, "It had an 'R'! It's celeBRATE!"

Sorry ... Couldn't help myself ....

They cannot get married because man made religion has dictated that they cannot. And for a start in Jesus time there was no Priests of Nuns only the high priests and relgious of the time which Jesus Called Sons of vipers and hipocrites.
The main reason why the Catholic Church stopped allowing marriages was because of money and no other reason. It simply cost to much money to look after a Priest and his family.
The Catholic Church also originally had believers baptism but when they started having compedition they introduced infant baptism as a way of gaining converts from the cradle.
Jesus came to pull down man made religion and build a new Church (unseen) not touched by human hands pure clean and undefiled by money and man made rituals.
Building Churches or buildings is a fleshly sickness which has prevailed from the beginning as Man struggles to have a relationship with a God who is a spirit. Only Jesus came in the likness of sinful flesh but his face is obsqured today man just loves to worship things they can touch and feel with their hands.
And about sex well whats wrong with sex its a beautifull thing which God has created for man and woman to become closer as the scriptures call it "The two shall become one flesh" We are not to Judge one another but all individually seek God on our own. Jesus said "The road to life is narrow and windy is its way but the road to hell is wide and many I say go that way".
The scriptures also say that man and women in christ are equal and they are can be part of a holy priesthood together in Christ Jesus. The Catholic Chirch and other man made religions supresses wemen always keeping them down they are still in the dark ages. Jesus came to liberate the woman and it is written that more wemen than men followed Jesus because he was a liberator of wemen he forgave them of their sins many times forced upon them by the cruel society which they lived and did not condem them but loved them.
The Catholic Chirch does not love wemen as it offers no alternative to a woman she is either a Saint or a hoare. By confessing sins to the priest it is a way of supressing wemen again and also contridictory to the teaching of the new testament that we should confess our sins to one another not to a priest.
Jesus was very angry at the religious at that time who made laws and rituals and it is the same today nothing has changed.
