If it says "service engine soon" and does not say "check engine", it is definitely safe to drive even a few hundred miles. It is just reminding you that regular maintenance is due.

Its absolutely safe to drive with that light on, you must be due for an oil change. As long as the vehicle is running correctly then its not going to damage anything running a few miles past a service.

If you have an Autozone parts store near you, they will do a computer check for free to tell you what triggered the light.
Depending on what is going on, it could be safe to drive anyway. It may even be a faulty sensor, so the car "thinks" something is wrong even if it isn't.
Most likely, it's nothing serious. As others have said, check your fluids just to be safe. If you have to drive, you have to drive.

Is the idiot light flashing, or just "on,"
If flashing, work is needed badly. If just "on" it means something needs attention.
If you have to drive, you have to drive, it may start flashing in 1 mile, or never.
Check the oil, check for leaks, and be careful and good luck.

check ALL your fluids, make sure you have oil pressure and water circulation and you should be good until you can get it checked out, it could be very minor, or it could be a warning for something that could develop into an expensive repair. If it still sounds good, and passes your inspection, I'd still only use it if you absolutely have to until you can sort it out.

check your oil and water, need a qt of oil put it in and drive.if water and oils ok drive it....the light is just an idiot light.
