Fiat Punto group 3 on insurance £60 for tax (6 months) my daughter has one and only just got her license I'm teaching her to drive her punto her insurance was £880 a year the punto is on a N plate don't get a nearly new car because your insurance will be more than the car is worth, don't go over a 1.4 either because this also puts your insurance up,direct line are the cheapest for young drivers at the moment.well good luck with getting a car and drive safely because if you go a year without a insurance claim next year will be so much cheaper.

I just passed too
I was learning in a Ford KA but I now have a Fiesta Si since passing.
My Fiesta has too much bottle for me to handle,
I would seriously get a KA if I had the chance,
I've only been driving 5 weeks and it's seriously scary to begin with
Don't get a car with too much bottle

It is going to depend entirely on what you are looking to spend.

Under a grand is banger territory. Japanese cars although good are expensive to insure and repair when things go wrong. I'd look at fiesta/escort or corsa/astra type of thing.

Insurance is the crippler, on your own policy look at in the region of £1500.

Stick with cars that have a 1ltr engine a Nissan micra would be a good choice. Shop around for insurance because you are only 17 I'm afraid it wont come cheap to you. Good luck with it and i hope you find one to suit.

def an import go along with a civic 1995+ reason being the parts are still widely used and cheap if something is to go wrong. it will hold its value insurance will be lower and if you want to have fun with it to customize(audio looks or performance) almost every brand makes for civic and its like putting together Lego's seriously i had a 96 civic 1.4 liter ex it was probably one of the best cars i owned and i bought it for 6000 back in 2002 sold it 2 years later for 5800 great choice if you ask me

Any small 1 litre car for a first time driver, and the insurance will be around £800-£1200 depending on who you insure with and where you live.

Toyota Yaris - it's very economical, low on insurance & you'll have your lifetime to get the Dream car when your more responsible and more able to afford the maintence & damage that can be caused. To me it's the hippest new things...to be cost effect, comfortable & long term.

Toyota Yaris (mk 1). It still looks modern, cheap to run and insure, and won't break down.

If you can afford it, go for T-Spirit spec, comes with air con.

Nissan micra - pretty basic but reliable, cheap to run and not too heavy on insurance
